Discovering the Cotswolds by e-bike
WORDS BY Katie JarvisEver tried an e-bike? It’s the perfect way to explore the Cotswolds, says Darren Purves of Cotswold eBikes, whether you’re an individual, couple, or a multi-generational family.
Darren, what's the advantage of an electric bike when exploring the Cotswolds?
I love the fact that e-bikes can help as much or as little as you like, by using the different modes of assistance that can easily be adjusted as you ride: it enables groups of mixed abilities to ride together at the same pace. Cycling is the perfect way to cover ground - but at a pace where you can really take everything in, as well as the ability to easily stop if you pass something of interest (historical or tasty!). Those things make it an amazing way to discover the real essence of a place. It’s also great to be out in the fresh air and not contributing to all the pollution.
What's your particular favourite route on an e-bike, starting from Cirencester?
There are so many, it's hard to choose! We're lucky to be based in such a beautiful part of the Cotswolds, surrounded by loads of pretty villages and countryside: there really is something worth seeing in every direction. The best thing about using pre-made (or custom) routes is the fact you’ll be shown all the small, quiet country lanes and be able to link them together to make sure you see as many sights and as few cars as possible.
What should people know before cycling off on an e-bike?
To come dressed for all weathers. We provide a pannier bag with each bike, so it's easy to store any layers you decide you don't need.
How far can you get, and what happens if you need to recharge?
Bikes will have top of the range batteries with more than enough capacity for a day-ride. If you rent the bike for multiple days, you should be provided with a charger for overnight.
How fast can one go?
Bikes are assisted up to 25kmh (UK law). You can ride faster than this, but under your own steam.
What should you never do on an e-bike?
Ride without a helmet! Good rental agencies will provide them.
Describe your own perfect picnic to buy from the Organic Farm Shop (on the same site) before you leave?
We're a BIG fan of the vegetable pasties, so definitely one of those, washed down with a ginger beer… always leaving room for a slice of cake, of course. (They're all delicious, but the chocolate almond is our top tip!). It’s all homemade and organic so you can feel pretty virtuous.
And where's your perfect picnic spot?
There are lots to choose from, but one of our faves is a bench in the sleepy village of Coln Rogers. It's right by the babbling River Coln, with views over the village and countryside. Perfect!
Age range?
Riding your own individual bike, then 14 years and up. But we do have accessories to cater for passengers from six months up to 100 years... even a trailer for the dog. So a perfect day out for the whole family.
