Cotswold food with views
What could be better than a fabulous Cotswold view…? One with a restaurant attached, of course. We’ve picked five of the area’s most deliciously quintessential vistas.
Ellenborough Park, Southam Ln, Cheltenham GL52 3NJ
This 500-year-old manor house in 90 acres of grounds is beautifully positioned at the foot of Cleeve Hill: the delicious filling in a sandwich that sees the Cotswolds’ highest point on one side, and the glorious gallops of Cheltenham Racecourse on the other.
And talking of sandwiches: you can enjoy everything from a full cream tea (do add a glass of fizz) to a classic country-house dinner at this five-star hotel. Or, simply, relax with champagne on the terrace.
The view: Beautiful undisrupted panoramic view of Cheltenham and the surrounding Cotswold rolling hills.
Best spot for dining: The Alfresco South Lawn. Featuring complementary dining carriages and patio tables, it makes for a great spot with surrounding nature.
Best spot for a sundowner: On a chair at the front of the hotel, facing the view as mentioned above: perfect for watching the sunset.
Burleigh Court, The Roundabouts, Brimscombe, Stroud GL5 2PF
The most secret of gems, passion exudes from Burleigh's warm and friendly team; the Grade II listed building captivating country charm with a splash of luxury, to provide a welcoming home-away-from-home experience
The view: Set within four acres of beautifully landscaped gardens in the hills above Stroud, Burleigh Court overlooks the picturesque Golden Valley (beautiful any time of year, but particularly sensational to view amidst the autumnal colours).
Best spot for dining: Our 2AA Rosette oak-panelled restaurant: a relaxed and unpretentious setting with stunning Cotswolds views; culinary creations are uncomplicated, seasonal dishes that go big on quality and flavour.
Best spot for a sundowner: A delicious cocktail while sitting out on the front terrace overlooking the surrounding gardens, listening for the Burleigh Bees, and taking in panoramic vistas over the Golden Valley beyond.
Calcot & Spa, Tetbury GL8 8YJ
Nestled amidst 220 acres of picturesque countryside near Tetbury, this 14th-century farmstead is a perfect escape for couples, families, and friends.
The view: Blessed to be surrounded by an abundance of nature and wonderful open spaces, Calcot’s 220 acres - over the last 25 years – have been given the space to rewild through wildflower planting and organic farming practices. Spot the herd of Belted Galloways as part of its ongoing partnership with the National Trust.
Best spot for dining: In The Brasserie, overlooking the gorgeous grounds: beautifully crafted food, relaxed service, and an eclectic and imaginative menu of truly stand-out dishes.
Best spot for a sundowner: By night, The Hive bar is the place to ‘bee’ to enjoy some seriously good pre-dinner cocktails. Even better, take your cocktail al fresco by heading to the courtyard to enjoy the last of the summer sun.
The Painswick, Kemps Lane, Painswick, Stroud GL6 6YB
Once a Palladian house, The Painswick stands as a testament to timeless allure, with a seamless blend of countryside cool and an irresistibly warm, cosy atmosphere designed to make guests feel right at home.
The view: Tucked amid rolling hills and honey-coloured stone cottages, the outdoor terrace offers a sweeping view over the famous Slad Valley, well-known for its connections with Cotswold writer Laurie Lee.
Best spot for dining: If the weather is right, then the terrace is the perfect spot for savouring mouth-watering dishes while taking in the far-reaching valley vistas.
Best spot for a sundowner: Even if it’s not quite warm enough to dine outside, the terrace is the place for pre-dinner drinks. (And, if it is chilly, guests can kick back in cosy lounges with open fires and a chic cocktail bar.)
Buckland Manor, Broadway WR12 7LY
Buckland Manor is popular for its pretty gardens, including a terrace. Set next to the church in the village of Buckland, guests are welcomed as if to the village’s manor.
Describe the view: It could be argued that the best view is looking at Buckland Manor… Or in one of the sumptuous sofas, gazing out through mullioned windows over the 10 acres of gardens filled with roses, heather, lavender, and a pretty herb garden, as well as a croquet lawn, tennis court, and stream.
Best spot for dining: Book early to enjoy one of the most popular tables in the restaurant, set next to the huge dining room windows, where the views over the garden will be as delicious as the dishes you are served. (Fresh local produce from the Vale of Evesham, as well as herbs straight from the garden.)
Best spot for a sundowner: Celebrate the English summer with the perfect sundowner on the garden terrace.
