Westonbirt Arboretum

Westonbirt Arboretum

With 2,500 plant species from all corners of the globe, and five national tree collections, the aboretum is a spectacular sight at any time of year.

Home to 16,000 trees, Westonbirt Arboretum is one of the best known, most important arboreta in the country. Robert Holford (whose impressive mansion across the road is now occupied by Westonbirt School) began planting back in 1829, using the variety of soils found here (from lime and alkaline to pockets of sand) to establish plants from around the world.

Today, it's a hugely popular attraction, ideal for leisurely strolls or guided walks along 17 miles of paths. Dogs are welcomed, off lead, in Silk Wood. Two thirds of the arboretum is dog-friendly.

Throughout the year, there are spectacular events: outdoor concerts in summer, and Christmas light-trails in winter, to name but a few. It's also worth looking at the courses available, such as tree identification, photography and art classes.

Picnics are welcomed; or you can buy something to eat and drink from the cafe and other refreshment areas.
